Outreach Projects for the Local Community 

With six campuses across Malaysia, TAR UMT is committed to make a difference in the  local communities we serve. We endeavour to make TAR UMT a university where students can learn how to make a difference in the world. To this end, we offer a variety of service-learning opportunities to students and we partner with community organisations for various environmental, charitable, and social causes. We believe that by working together with the local communities, we can build stronger relationships, address common challenges, and create a better future for everyone. Some of the highlights: 

Oct - Dec 2023

Sustainable Schools Initiative- Empowering Future Builders. A Corporate Social Responsibility and Knowledge Transfer Programme by the Faculty of Built Environment to instill sustainable practices and environmental awareness (UN SDG12: Responsible Consumption and Production) among 265 students from SK Wangsa Maju Seksyen 2, Kuala Lumpur. This programme was co-organised by The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Malaysia, and funded by TAR UMT’s industry partner Wawasan Properties Development (M) Sdn Bhd.

Department of Mata Pelajaran Umum, FSSH community engagement under MPU-3202 Service Learning. MPU-3202 Service Learning is designed to introduce students to the principles and practices of service learning and community engagement. Through a combination of classroom instruction and practical experience, students will explore the role of civic responsibility, social justice, and ethical engagement in creating positive change within communities. Service Learning can help students to integrate classroom learning with hands-on community service projects. In the 202309 semester, our ‘Service Learning’ students from different programmes conducted a number of community projects. The main purpose of all the projects was to share and apply their knowledge for the benefit of the community. Some of the projects are listed below:

Department of Mata Pelajaran Umum, FSSH charity projects under MPU-2312 / 2352 Civic Consciousness and Volunteerism Course . Civic Consciousness and Volunteerism (CCV) is a general studies course that is offered to diploma students in TAR UMT with the aim of creating awareness among students about the importance of civil responsibility and empathy for others. Students acquire various skills, knowledge and experiences through all the charitable and voluntary activities that are organized and conducted by the students for the course. This kind of exposure not only shapes them into responsible citizens, but also instills noble values that can change their lives for the better. In the 202305 session and 202309 session, a team consisting of eight full time and seven part time academic staff from FSSH and approximately 2,400 TAR UMT students from all the seven faculties carried out various activities such as fund raising activities, selling various items, recycling awareness campaign, fabric recycling project, carrying out volunteer work and zero waste awareness campaign. Through the fundraising project, students were successful in raising a total amount of RM 74,247.01 in cash and kind. The fund raised has been donated to 26 beneficiaries chosen from different segments of the society, including shelter homes, organizations assisting the differently abled, the orang asli community, refugees, the elderly, animals, the poor and those with serious illnesses.

Empowering Orang Asli Through Culinary Skills Knowledge Transfer Programme (25 November 2023) FSSH KL conducted a knowledge transfer programme to empower the Orang Asli community of Kampung Orang Asli BAtu 12, Gombak, Selangor. The programme enabled 25 members of the community to gain first-hand experience in cooking a variety of cuisine including Malaysian Hawker style fried noodles as well as pastries.

Empowering Orang Asli Through Culinary Skills Knowledge Transfer Programme (14 October 2023). FSSH KL conducted a knowledge transfer programme to empower the Orang Asli community of SEMOA Orang Asli Education Centre Raub, Pahang. Members of the community were introduced to food safety guidelines as well as basic cooking and baking skills. As participants included many young adults, the members of the community also participated in activities designed to assist them in personal growth and overcoming obstacles.

Empowerment Project: English Language Classes for Refugees. The Department of English Studies, FSSH KL conducted English Language classes for women from the Somali refugee community in an effort to empower participants through language learning. The language classes also enabled lecturers and students to participate in community service. Classes were conducted on a weekly basis for 10 weeks.  A total of 20 academic staff and 22 students volunteered in this project.

'Sow Health Reap Happiness' Campaign". The "Sow Health Reap Happiness" campaign, organised by the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology, was held on 13 September 2023. This health awareness initiative was organised by the psychology and counselling students as part of their coursework, aimed to enhance mental and physical well-being among the university's students, staff, and the nearby community. The campaign focused on educating the audience about health issues, encouraging healthier lifestyle choices, reducing stigma around health matters, and empowering individuals to manage their health effectively. This comprehensive approach sought to foster a supportive environment, promoting open discussions and informed decisions towards improved health outcomes.

Penang S.T.E.M. Future Proofing for Engineering and Computer Science. To conduct 80 hours of classes for the course related to Computer Science and Engineering. 

24 - 26 Jun 2023

3-Days 2-Nights Science and Engineering Camp @TARUMT Johor (Collaborate with Pay Fong High School) on Printed circuit board (PCB) making. Introduce the fabrication process of printed circuit board (PCBs) to students, and followed by conduct a soldering of components onto the prepared PCB session for students to hand-on. The PCB works as a touchless doorbell.

Vision Care 2.0 Project. TAR UMT Sabah's Community Sociology members volunteered to assist in the community project by Rotary Sabah. The project aims to do eye tests to school children and provide vision aid to those with impaired vision. Tested 47 students with impaired vision out of 400 students of SJK Kin Kiau Kinarut.

STEM talk on AI: Assisting or Replacing. Speaker introduced the theory of AI and how AI works to the secondary school students. The purpose is to provide an insight to the secondary school student, at the same time cultivating their interests towards STEM.

English and Maths Day at SJKC Chenderiang. TAR UMT Perak branch students were given opportunity to teach primary English and Maths to Primary 4-6 school students.

Fund Raising and volunteering at Cheshire Home. TAR UMT Sabah students raised fund for donation to Cheshire Home - shelter for children and adults in Kota Kinabalu and did volunteer work there.

Tortoise Conservation Programme. TAR UMT Perak branch staff and students were given the opportunity to clean the ponds and compound and released 10 tortoises to the Perak River.

Tree Planting programme. TAR UMT Perak Staff and Students were able to plant 75 trees as part of 100 million tree planting programme.

Helping Hands, Helping Smiles Beach Cleaning Project by TAR UMT Sabah branch. 65 volunteers that involved students and staff collected 25 bags worth of pollutants on the Teluk Likas beach in Kota Kinabalu.

Beach cleanup at Pantai Remis, Kuala Selangor. Participants come together to collect and dispose of trash, such as plastic bottles, wrappers, polystyrene packaging, diapers and other items that can harm marine life and degrade the beach's natural beauty.

Beach cleaning with the help of Trash Hero Kuantan at Taman Gelora Beach in Kuantan. Around 80kg of trash were collected.

Dengue Prevention Community Cleanup 'Gotong Royong'. TAR UMT students and staff participated in the community cleanup at Taman Bunga Raya opposite the TAR UMT Main Campus. The event involved the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Ministry of Health, and Taman Bunga Raya community committee.
